Audio
Show notes that open Spotify.
Listeners tap from a phone, a car screen, or a newsletter. A Smart Link in the show notes opens Spotify, YouTube, or the guest’s Instagram in the native app.
Some browsers require another tap. How app opening works

The cost of a web player
Show-note taps should not open a browser.
The listener is already in a podcast app or on a phone. A raw Spotify or YouTube URL often opens a webpage, a login, or a player with no library button. Guests notice when their follow link feels broken.
01
Every episode is a bundle of destinations.
The episode itself, the guest’s Instagram, a clip on YouTube — each one deserves an in-app open.
02
Notes are read after the listen, on a phone.
That is a deep-link problem. A shortener that only shrinks the URL leaves the hard part unsolved.
03
Per-episode links are a programming report.
See which guests and which links actually got tapped, by city, instead of guessing from downloads alone.
Practical plays
Three show-note links worth making smart.

The Spotify episode in every description
YouTube, the newsletter, and the site all point at one Smart Link. Phones open Spotify. You see which surface sent the listen-tap.
The same episode URL is correct everywhere.

Guest Instagram from the notes
The follow-the-guest line is a Smart Link. Listeners open Instagram instead of a browser profile that asks them to log in twice.
The guest sees follows, not “link didn’t work” DMs.

Guests keep saying the Instagram link in our notes opens a blank safari page. Need something that opens the IG app.

YouTube clip for people who will not open audio
A Smart Link to the clip opens YouTube on phones. Use a separate slug from the Spotify link so you can see which format won.
Video and audio get honest, separate click counts.

Show notes, on rails
One slug per destination. Reuse it all week.
01
Create a link per destination
Spotify episode, YouTube clip, guest Instagram — separate Smart Links if you want separate analytics.
02
Paste them into notes and descriptions
Host dashboards, YouTube descriptions, newsletters, and the site can share the same slugs.
03
Listeners open the native app
Supported destinations prefer Spotify, YouTube, or Instagram on iOS and Android.
04
See which notes earned taps
Compare episodes in the dashboard. Export when you want clicks next to download numbers.
Questions
Questions about this playbook.
- Will a Smart Link open the Spotify app from show notes?
- When the destination is a Spotify URL and the listener is on a phone with Spotify installed, Smart Link prefers the Spotify app. Desktop still opens the web player.
- Can I use the same links in YouTube descriptions and the newsletter?
- Yes. Reuse the slug everywhere. Referrer and device data help you see which surface sent the tap.
- Does this work with Apple Podcasts or Pocket Casts notes?
- If the app renders a tappable HTTPS URL, a Smart Link works. We do not need a podcast-host integration. Some apps restrict outbound links — that is the host’s rule, not ours.
- Should the episode and the guest each have their own link?
- Usually yes. Separate slugs let you see whether people wanted the listen or the follow. It is still one Pro plan for unlimited links.
- Can I track a YouTube podcast the same way?
- Yes. Paste the YouTube URL. Mobile listeners prefer the YouTube app. That is the same routing as the YouTube link shortener, reused in show notes.
